Art Is

The whole idea that you have to put paints on canvas or strum a guitar for it to be art is limited thinking to the extreme. Everything is art. Everything that you see around you from houses to clothes to political systems to sports could be done differently . . . way differently, and will be done differently at other times. All of it is designed and created by little minds with ideas. Whenever I hear people say, "That's the way it is," or "That's the system," I think they're not paying attention. There is no "way" or "system." There are only individual people doing things. There is no government. There are only individual people acting. There is no military. There are only individual people acting. In all facets of life, there are only individual people acting. And people design and create their every move. Relationships are created like symphonies. Careers are put together the same way. They're all creative acts.

Some people really let loose and let their intuition and individual vision lead the way. Other people look at what "everyone" else is doing and try to emulate it. I always wonder what the world would look like if everyone was expressing their unique outlook instead of trying so hard to mold themselves to some screwed up idea of the "ideal." There is no ideal, and this should be most apparent in the world of art. Art is supposed to be individual expression, so there should be great diversity of ideas in that arena.

In my opinion, the whole idea of art should be broadened to encompass what it is -- individual creativity. It's everywhere, and the advantage to knowing this is understanding that it's mallable. First and foremost, there's room to make life alot more fun. We're not stuck in some plaster cast society. Who says you have to work the way other people have been working? Why? Who says being dulled, cynical, and downcast makes you more realistic? It makes you an idiot. No child ever thinks, "When I get older, I'm going to control the shit out of things." They think about how much fun they're going to have. They think about jumping out of planes, about inventing things, about having a family, about traveling, about learning. And they get told really quickly that their dreams are not realistic. "You have to work at a job you don't like because work is hard and money comes from work that's hard and you have to have money and on and on . . ." All of these cultural ideas are made up, and not even made up very well.

I think life is art, and that creative types should live creatively. In a constantly changing world, I think the people who call themselves "artists" should lead the way.
