Reality Television Sucks

Here's a rant for ya - I'm completely and utterly exhausted with this so called 'reality television.' When did when we as a society begin to lower our standards to remotely consider this entertainment? It must be some form of guilty pleasure. At least the Romans made you watch in person. Oh, and by the way - it's everything but real. Nothing real about it. Sorry.

Rock Star, Queer Eye for the Straight guy/girl, Fear Factor, Dancing with the Stars, Do I even begin talking about The Will, which by the way was pulled after one taping. Yikes! Seriously though, I just can't stand it. I promised myself a while back I was going to e-bay my television and pay my mom back, but that's another story. At the last moment I decided I still needed some form of mind numbing entertainment so I kept it for the good channels: History, Discovery, A&E, Bravo.

However, I have to say even those channels have their own stripped down, more enlightened forms of reality TV. Myth Busters, Monster Garage, Inside The Actors' Studio (damn, he's annoying), Full Throttle, American Hot Rod, American Chopper, Change my life, Give me a new a new wife, Shoot my dog, whatever..... Damn, the more I think about it the scarier it gets.

So here I am writing my rant, listening to some streaming internet music, hoping others will come across this blog and say 'Amen, F@*! those shows.' And F@*! Donald Trump. His a** is fired!

You want reality. Something REAL. I can't stand my job and can't stand myself at times for putting up with it. I love my beautiful girlfriend, music, and rain storms. We work all the time, hoping we can make enough to pay down our debt, save a little, and get the band on tour!

Here are a couple of links to put this reality show thing into perspective.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_reality_television_programs – It’s frightening to see how many reality shows there are.

http://www.zonalatina.com/Zldata302.htm – An interesting read on the psychology relating to reality TV including a survey on the demographics of its viewers. Notice the correlation between education and TV frequency. Not surprising.

I'm not going to change tv. This is free enterprise. I'll take the good with the bad. You want freedoms you'll have excess. Stop fighting for your 'right' to not be offended. I totally agree. I can't stand the reality trend. I mean my grandma watches it! I'm like 'damn this family is going to shit.' I used to love watching the history channel but that has the reality crap 2...that and a ton of ww2. I do have a digital recorder so I pick out the jems from the junk. I want you to know that I totally agree on the reality stuff. Watching any of those shows is like watching pro wrestling. What also makes me sick is that so many people get caught up in it. I also want to let ya know that I'm just tired of tv in general. There's no sense of community compared to the potential for one without a mesmer box. It's a ghost town all the time wherever ya live. If I go outside it takes me an hour to find someone that isn't out because they need to walk their dog or do yard work. Lotsa people are fat. I'm not sure getting rid of tv would fix all that but I'd give so much just to get rid of all tv for a week. We'd still be able to get emergency broadcasts and the vital information but other than that just nothing. No tv. I feel so lost in the thought of how much we are missing out on bonding with one another as humans because of some electronic equipment..I'm not saying it's not entertaining but I'd give it up if it meant a stronger community. I belonged to one once and I really really miss it. Most people don't even know what it feels like. I love you tv. :)

Yeah I agree with both of you. First off Reality TV is not 'real', it's still Hollywood but the scenarios are slightly more familiar (if you have $3,000,000 to spend on your lifestyle a year). The bottom line is that if you don't entertain typical tv watchers, they will get bored. All we see is actors that are trying to 'get theirs' by 'acting normal'. How do you act normal ? It's impossible, so there is the problem. Once a camera is on them, they are not themselves. If they don't provide a certain amount of entertainment at the right times in the right amounts, then the show would be canned due to lack of interest. So, reality tv is not reality or going to be aslong as the watcher demands to be entertained in order to validate watching the show. The producers know the 'demands' on them from viewers due to history stats and viewer stats. This leads to point 2. The second submission in this diary was interesting because the author mentioned that the viewer has the power to not watch sometinhg. So true. The consumer is the most powerful player in the economics game. ALWAYS. If the views don't watch it, eat it, ride it, buy it, rent it, fuck it, then it won't be on the market because the seller needs to make money off it in 99.9% of cases. BUT, most people will watch, buy stupid mind numbing crap because we don't know what else to do with our spare time. Both of the posters mentioned that they like family values and outdoors stuff more than crap reality tv and I admire that. I am also a 'go do it' guy rather than a 'watch others do it' person. So, how do we handle the frustration of reality tv ? I guess there are always going to be less people crowding the cool outdoors stuff we like to do when they are on their couch, so that's a good thing. Society will have to go through this mass consumer approach to life probably in order to evolve. I always say, 'if something can be done, someone has or will do it'. So if humans are at a low level of intellect and powerlessness right now, I guess that's just where we are at. There is no harm in letting people know that they should maybe get off their fat asses and go walk the dog and not watch reality tv, but ultimately people will just do what they want to any expence if it makes them satisfied. I think the worlds people will get bored of being stupid and then start becoming wise as a change. Sounds funny but it is what I think will happen. There are many wise and less consuming people in the world that look at us all and think we are even more lazy and mindless than them. And then theres other people around the world who look at them and say that they are too lazy and stupid etc and it goes on, right down to the most peaceful fulfilled and kind person who would probably not even bother complaining because they are in bliss either way humanity goes. So, live and let live I say, but dialogue is also important to get didfferent opinions about a subject matter and to see if others can shed light on it. I think it's cool that you two think the same way as me and I hope we can continue to be the 'others' so that we may lead the riff raff into a more evolved way through example one day soon. I am off surfing now, Western Australia. Wish you were here so we could talk more over a shrimp on the 'barbie'. Cheers mate.

Television Sucks altogether.
Change does not happen through the media..its basically a drug.

I watch pbs alot, choose not to get cable b/c its a whole lot of nothing on.

Basically we'd all be better off without t.v.s and i find talking abuot it even more dull.

Ditto to all the above !!! Is it just that it costs the networks less to do reality TV or has all the writing talent just plain dried up? Scary thing is, the networks aren't listening to anyone. Does it all boil down to greed??? It's pretty sad when the only thing on cable (450 + channels) worth watching is "Cops". This has been the MOST boring television season EVER!!! Reality TV bores me to tears. I too, watch the History Channel, The Travel Channel, The Food Channel, Sci-Fi, etc. But after awhile, it's all reruns, isn't it?? Hope the networks wake-up soon.
